Monetary Donations FAQ

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE TAX CREDIT IN PLAIN ENGLISH?

The easiest way to explain is by thinking in terms of the money spent: if you have a $1,000 tax liability (regardless of how much you’ve had withheld), then you can either choose to give that money to the state to decide how it will be used, or you can give that same dollar amount to Jessie’s Closet and know that you are making a difference!

HOW MUCH CAN I GIVE AND RECEIVE A TAX CREDIT?

The current maximum (for 2023 Tax returns) is $526 for an individual, or $1,051 for a couple filing jointly.

IS IT REALLY REFUNDABLE?

Yes, in the sense that if you have a tax liability and have had withholding or have made payments that cover that tax liability, then the state will refund your overpayment.

CAN I DONATE TO MORE THAN ONE CHARITY?

The short answer is yes, although the maximum amount allowed for the credit remains the same and now must be distributed among the charities chosen.

I ALWAYS GIVE TO THE SCHOOL TAX CREDIT … CAN I DO BOTH?

There are several ways to get tax credits by making donations. Qualified Foster Care Organizations are just one of many separate credits you may elect. In addition to the school tax credits, there are Qualified Charitable Organizations that also are able to receive tax credit donations. As long as you have tax liability, you can give.

I ALWAYS GIVE TO THE SCHOOL TAX CREDIT … CAN I DO BOTH?

You can visit the Arizona Department of Revenue’s website for more information. Your tax preparer or CPA is also a good resource.

HOW DO I KNOW MY CREDIT CARD INFORMATION IS SAFE?

We use state-of-the-art technology and your card information is processed and held by our third-party processor and your card information is never shared with Jessie’s Closet, its employees, or volunteers.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO GIVE?

Gifts received can be received anytime in the year, but must be postmarked or received by April 15 for the credit to be valid for the previous tax year.
